Geodes-Science Rocks!
By Mrs. Strop

A geode is a sphere-shaped, dull-looking rock with a rough outside that contains a mystery on the inside! The inner cavity is lined with crystals such as quartz, calcite, or amethyst. They form over thousands of years when minerals and moisture seep into cavities within volcanic or sedimentary rocks, creating the crystals. Fifth graders had a great time studying geodes! One of the fascinating things is that comparing geodes by weight, color, texture, and size doesn't guarantee what they will look like when cracked open! A fun, exciting, and learning experience was had by all who participated! Science Rocks!

From Guidance Counselor Mrs. Graf:
The Freshmen and some Junior leaders had so much fun at the Respect Retreat in Lake Holcombe with many other area schools. We had awesome speakers from Minneapolis that led us in small group discussions, large group games, music and talks, and some of our students even stood up in front of everyone at the very end to share about respect. The main focus of the day was showing respect to ourselves, to others, and to stand up for others. Our students represented Winter so wonderfully!

The kindergarten class has been working so hard on their reading that it’s time to LEVEL UP! They are reading aloud and working towards a level D by the end of the school year. Thankfully, Mrs. Strop's fifth graders have been graciously helping Mrs. Wergeland by being an extra set of eyes and ears to listen to them read for extra practice. Many thanks to Colin, Aurora, Scarlet, and Ava for being strong leaders!
